Speech & Language Therapy

This includes difficulties with production of speech sounds (e.g., /r/) or consistent patterns of speech sound errors (e.g., producing /t, d/ for /k, g/). Treatment approaches will differ depending on your child’s individual speech errors.

This is a motor planning disorder typically characterized by inconsistent productions of sounds/words and difficulties producing longer words. Treatment will address principles of motor learning for fluidity and consistency of speech.

A receptive language difficulty involves difficulties understanding language; this might involve difficulties following directions, difficulties answering a variety of questions, etc.
An expressive language difficulty involves difficulties expressing wants/needs/feelings. Additionally, it could involve difficulties asking questions or sharing about events/experiences.

AAC stands for augmentative & alternative communication. This could involve American Sign Language, a high-tech communication device, picture boards, etc. Like Honey addresses communication difficulties utilizing a variety of approaches and total communication to provide your child with increased access to communication and to meet their individual needs.

Literacy difficulties could involve difficulties learning to read, difficulties with reading comprehension, dyslexia, etc.

Auditory processing difficulties could be characterized by difficulties understanding and following directions, recalling verbally presented information, or increased difficulties understanding and completing tasks with increased background noise.

Stuttering is an interruption in the flow or rate/rhythm of speech which could have a psychological impact on children. Therapy would address easy stuttering and strategies for improved rate of speech.
Cluttering is characterized by an abnormal rate of speech, irregular pauses, and reduced awareness of rate of speech. Therapy would address improving awareness of speech and improving rate of speech.

This involves a child who is comfortable utilizing verbal speech in some settings and inability to utilize verbal speech in other settings. Treatment would support easing anxiety and creating opportunities for self-advocacy and independent communication.

Many children develop language in chunks, or gestalts (e.g., scripts from favorite television shows, parents, etc.). Therapeutic intervention will support development of functional communication through gestalt language therapy.
Feeding / Swallowing

Noted by difficulties with latch, choking at the breast/bottle, excessive reflux, tongue clicking on breast/bottle, excessive breast pain when feeding, or a physical difference (e.g., cleft palate, lip/tongue tie, etc.) impacting feeding skill.

Oral ties can impact feeding, airway, and speech. We will work with a therapeutic team, including a pediatric periodontist/dentist and ENT, to address all possible underlying concerns and support your child’s overall development.

This could involve only consuming specific brands of preferred foods, a limited diet, anxiety in response to new foods, etc.
Therapeutic approaches will involve play-based feeding interaction and food chaining to novel foods to improve your child’s overall health and nutrition.

A swallowing disorder could be characterized by coughing/choking during feeds, reflux, difficulties managing food or different food textures within the mouth or during/following a swallow, or reduced feeding skills impacting safety with foods.
